READ Reverse Heart Disease Now

reverse-heart-disease-now-dr-sinatra-dr-roberts
Reverse Heart Disease Now is a book written by Integrative Cardiologists, Dr. Stephen Sinatra MD FACC and Dr. James Roberts MD FACC.

This book is chock-full of information.  Not just good information (which it is that too,) but LIFE-SAVING information!  When a friend loaned it to me to read, I couldn't put it down!  I read through the entire book in one sitting.  It is so important to anyone serious about their heart health to buy it, rent it, or just read it!!

Dr. Roberts is located in Toledo, OH, but does do long distance telephone consultations if you are interested.  You can visit his site here at Heart Fixer.

Dr. Stephen Sinatra has since retired from presently practicing cardiology, but does have valuable information on his websites: Dr. Sinatra.com and Heart MD Institute.

The Case for HCG & Weight-Loss

Could HCG be a Life Ring?

Could HCG be a life ring?

HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin) is the hormone that is excreted in pregnant women's urine.  This hormone increases daily in pregnancy.  Dr. Simeons is the founder of Pounds and Inches, a manuscript written by him, explaining his protocol of his treatment of obesity.   This document is easily found across the internet, describing his approach to using a 500 calorie diet plan along with an intramuscular injection of HCG that he used to treat obesity for weight-loss or weight-redistribution.

Today, much more current research has been done investigating just why and how this hormone-diet therapy works to abolish abnormal fat.  A book written by exercise physiologist, Robin Phipps Woodall, Weight Loss Apocalypse, has shed some light on what a very good hypothesis might be regarding Dr. Simeon's HCG Protocol.  It seems that there is a connection with a newly discovered hormone called Leptin and the hormone, HCG.  The hormone leptin is thought to be resistant (or desensitized) in an obese person's body where the hunger-appetite-satiety response is out of kilter.

By presenting a low dose of HCG in an obese person's body, this hunger-appetite-satiety is somehow resensitized and the body readily begins to use the abnormal fat storage for fuel in the presence of Dr. Simeons' 500 calorie diet.

In Robin Phipps Woodall's book, Weight Loss Apocalypse , many other strategies and behavioral patterns are exposed to succeed at weight-loss and maintaining it.

Robin offers local assistance with her Mind:Body HCG Method and also long distance assistance as well.

Weston A. Price

Dr Weston A. Price
Who was Weston A. Price?

(1870-1948) He was a dentist who was well known for his research in regards to the relationship between nutrition, dental health, and one's physical health. He also founded the National Dental Association, which is now known as the American Dental Association.

His research can be found in the book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.  Today, The Weston A. Price Foundation, founded in 1999, by Sally Fallon and nutritionist Dr. Mary Enig, has continued to disseminate the research and nutritional theories of his work.

Please see an excerpt from their mission statement:

"The Weston A. Price Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity founded in 1999 to disseminate the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price, whose studies of isolated nonindustrialized peoples established the parameters of human health and determined the optimum characteristics of human diets. Dr. Price's research demonstrated that humans achieve perfect physical form and perfect health generation after generation only when they consume nutrient-dense whole foods and the vital fat-soluble activators found exclusively in animal fats.
The Foundation is dedicated to restoring nutrient-dense foods to the human diet through education, research and activism. It supports a number of movements that contribute to this objective including accurate nutrition instruction, organic and biodynamic farming, pasture-feeding of livestock, community-supported farms, honest and informative labeling, prepared parenting and nurturing therapies. Specific goals include establishment of universal access to clean, certified raw milk and a ban on the use of soy formula for infants.
The Foundation seeks to establish a laboratory to test nutrient content of foods, particularly butter produced under various conditions; to conduct research into the "X Factor," discovered by Dr. Price; and to determine the effects of traditional preparation methods on nutrient content and availability in whole foods."

Integrative Medicine

Asklepios

What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative Medicine is different than the conventional Western medicine approach in that it attempts to include a "treat the whole-person" approach.

Integrative medicine can include such alternative treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, biofeedback, thermographic imagery, nutritional supplementation among many other treatment modalities specific to an area of care.

Most integrative medicine practitioners take more of a holistic health care approach and can be sometimes referred to as holistic medicine providers too.

Here is a link to learn more about integrative medicine.

A Simple Cranberry Relish

Cranberries
Cranberries are such an amazing fruit!

Packed with antioxidants, they are not only beneficial to your urinary tract, but emerging research shows they have a lot to offer elsewhere in your body too!

Did you know there is actually a Cranberry Institute

Try this easy and delicious recipe to increase your intake of cranberries:

1 bag of frozen or fresh cranberries, cleaned and rinsed (I buy in the fall and freeze for all year long use)
1 orange, frozen or fresh, peeled (I also peel and freeze orange sections when in season)
1 TBSP of xylitol from non GMO source (more or less to your taste)

(Optional:  exchange orange with an apple-peel if not organic)

Blend in a food processor till the consistency you desire.  Enjoy!

a-simple-cranberry-relish

The bowl on the left is with an orange and the right is with an apple (I left the skin on the apple)...my kids like this tart, but if you want it more sweet, add a dash of stevia or another spoonful of xylitol.

What is the Paleo Diet?

cave-man-picture

"Paleo" refers to Paleolithic...essentially referring to "cave man" days!  This style of eating is back to a hunter - gatherer style diet, (meaning our ancestors hunted for their food and also ate what they could gather in regards to berries or nuts.)  It is low carb in the sense that it is void of grains- whether "traditionally prepared" or not, but it is also void of a lot of processed junk.  No twinkies found here!

My only problem with this "diet" is true "paleo" refers to no dairy products, and the consumption of lean meat.  I know this diet wasn't exactly found by Dr. Weston A. Price in his travels...so, I consider this basically a "low carb" style diet and use the word "Paleo" loosely in that regard.
Some great links to read more about this style of eating are here:

Why Farm Fresh Eggs

Farm Fresh Eggs From Our Chickens
Why choose farm fresh free range eggs?

There are several reasons worth knowing and understanding.

Not only are they FRESH, meaning they are not already several weeks old before they get to the store shelves, but they are loaded with nutrition.

Here's an idea of the nutritional difference I am talking about:

Naturally Occurring In Farm Fresh Eggs (Compared to Industrialized Eggs):

Differences Graph of Fresh Eggs and Industrialized Eggs
4-6 Times More Vitamin D
1/3 Less Cholesterol
1/4 Less Saturated Fat
2/3 More Vitamin A
2 Times More Omega-3 Fatty Acids
3 Times More Vitamin E
7 Times More Beta Carotene

You want to buy eggs that are from chickens raised in a healthy environment....an environment where chickens are allowed to free-range and forage for food, allowed to run around and enjoy sunshine, that's the kind of eggs I want to eat.  Chickens need love and sunshine too!

See these links below for a lot more information on fresh eggs off the farm.

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

no-shell-taco
PUT TACO MEAT ON A SALAD INSTEAD!!!
We love this taco mix.  Whenever I make taco meat, this is what we use.

No monosodium glutamate or MSG (neuro-toxin=kills brain cells), or carmel coloring (linked to cancer) in this mix, among some other nasty ingredients in pre-packaged seasoning mixes.

Only natural spices and flavor found!

Taco Seasoning:
- 3 tbsp dried minced onion
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp granulated garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp dried, crushed oregano
- 2 tsp ground cumin
-  ¼ tsp cayenne

Mix all ingredients in small bowl.  Divide mix evenly into 4 small packets.  1 packet and ½ cup water seasons 1 lb of ground beef.  Add seasoning mix and water after beef is browned, and simmer for approximately 5-10 minutes.

Strep Throat Remedy

streptococcal-pharyngitis
This is a very valuable formula that can save you hundreds and hundreds of dollars in medical expenses and get you over these kinds of conditions quickly.

We have used it before and it has worked great.

Here’s the formula:
* One tablespoon of pure honey

* ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper

* Four cloves of garlic pressed through a garlic press

Those are the proportions, but you’ll need more than that, so take four tablespoons of honey, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper and sixteen pressed cloves of garlic, and mix that all together.  Take ½ teaspoon to one teaspoon of the formula every 30-60 minutes.

Don’t wash it down - let the honey coat the throat, then the cayenne, being a rubefacient, will bring blood into the area, and then your immune system will be stimulated with the garlic.  Garlic is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral, so anything that may be causing the sore throat the garlic, along with the cayenne and the honey coating the area, will take care of the problem.

How long does it take to get over strep throat with the standard medical procedure?  10 days.  This herbal remedy will generally get you over strep throat in 24 hours.

Garlic, cayenne, honey - another safe and effective herbal remedy with no side effects.  You know it is going to work, and it’s going to work nine days faster than the standard medical procedure.

(Note on the honey - it needs to be pure honey.  Most beekeepers feed their bees sugar, which weakens the bee’s immune system, so they get mites coming into the hives.  To prevent mites from coming into the hives they give them antibiotics, further weakening the immune system of the bees.  Find local honey where the beekeeper doesn’t feed the bees sugar and doesn’t give them antibiotics.  You can often find good results if you check with your local health food store.)

Need a Nutritionist?

Maria-Emmerich
I have to give credit where credit is due.  This nutritionist is on the spot!  I know from my mom's personal experience!

Here is a testimonial my mom wrote about Maria Emmerich's Nutritional Consulting:

"Working with Maria was the BEST thing I have done! It was worth every dime I spent .... and I am ever so grateful for her!

When I began working with Maria, it was 4-5 months after I had a heart attack. My weight during that time was 182 lbs on my 5 foot 6 inch frame. I had type 2 diabetes and also an A1c that was 8.3 (way out of the normal range.) Total Cholesterol 257, Triglycerides 158, LDL 183, HDL 42.

On the insisting of my daughter, I signed up to work with Maria. I followed her plan and her recipes and supplements she suggested for me. I was amazed at how accurate her suggestions were later after consulting an Integrative Cardiologist, who has continued to help with the recovery of my heart function.

Following Maria's advice was the best step I have had in the turn around of my health. Within 3 months of her plan, my weight had dropped to 163, and I astounded my doctors not only with weight loss, but my blood work too. My A1c dropped down to 6.4, then 5.5 on the next reading. Cholesterol levels were lowered, my blood sugar readings were lower...and I felt better than I had in years! After a few months of her plan my Cholesterol Total was 166, Triglycerides 75, LDL 96, and HDL 55.
Today, now 1 year and 7 months later after starting with Maria, I am now down to 153 lbs (Triglycerides dropped to 54!) and continue to feel great! My A1c and cholesterol levels are all within normal range and I truly owe my gratitude to Maria for all her hard work. Not to mention, her recipes are delicious too!! THANK YOU MARIA!!!"

Every word is true.  This woman is amazing.  She has a blog, recipes, an online consultation, and metabolic classes among her other educational classes she offers.  Please check her out - click here!

Sea Salt or Table Salt?

Celtic Sea Salt
My Jarred Celtic Sea Salt- Isn't it Lovely?
We only ever use sea salt in our house.  The reason why is simple.

Typical table salt that you would buy from the grocery shelf is void of precious minerals and elements your body needs.  Not only that, it can also be potentially toxic to your health.  Refined table salt has be stripped of all the natural minerals that are found in salt.  Refined table salt has also been exposed to toxic chemicals to "bleach" it white.

I prefer to use Celtic Sea Salt for all my baking and cooking.  The flavor and taste it adds to food is amazing.  I always heard the best cooking is made better with an excellent quality sea salt and I do believe that is true.  I have used Redmond's Real Sea Salt too and like the fine version for the salt shaker.

Iodine - Who Needs It?

Who Needs It?  Who doesn't need it?  Everybody needs iodine!

My family and I take an iodine supplement daily.  Years ago we started supplementation after reading a book and testing our iodine levels called Iodine Why You Need it Why You Can't Live Without It by Dr. David Brownstein.  This book is worth your time to read.  Please go rent it from the library!

iodine-why-you-need-it-dr-brownstein
Listen to what page 21 says, "What Does Iodine Do?"

"For over 100 years, iodine has been know as the element that is necessary for thyroid hormone production.  However, it is rare to see any further mention of iodine's other effects in the body.  Iodine is found in each of the trillions of cells in the body.  Without adequate iodine levels, life itself is not possible.

Iodine is not only necessary for the production of thyroid hormone, it is responsible for the production of all of the other hormones of the body.  Adequate iodine levels are necessary for the proper immune system function.  Iodine contains potent antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, and anticancer properties.  Iodine is also effective for treating fibrocystic breasts and ovarian cysts.  Table 1 lists some of the many benefits of iodine and some of the conditions that would benefit from adequate iodine supplementation.  This book will review the many therapeutic aspects of iodine.
Approximately 1.5 billion people, about one-third of the earths' population, live in an area of iodine deficiency as defined by the World Health Organization.  Iodine deficiency disorder can result in mental retardation, goiter, increased child and infant mortality, infertility, and socioeconomic decline.  Iodine deficiency disorder is the most common preventable form of mental retardation known. "

If that doesn't make you want to read more than I don't know what will.  Iodine is just that important!
Iodine supplementation should be started with caution though.  Dr. Brownstein recommends testing your levels before starting any supplementation.  He includes testing sites and prices for that too.

Click here for a link to Dr. Brownstein's website for more information.

We sell Lugol's 2% iodine solution here.

Iced Tea in the South

Stevita Spoonable Stevia

In the south, we love our iced tea...SWEET!!

So, if you are one of those that just can't stand the thought of backing off the sugar in their tea, here is an idea for you.  Make a gallon of your favorite brew and add a heaping TBSP of Stevita Spoonable Stevia and you will save yourself an insulin spike for sure.  I have tried many (and use many stevia sweeteners), but for our tea, I really like using this one particular brand.  We have used it with all different flavors of tea and it works great.  It is best to add the stevia and whisk to your freshly brewed tea before chilling so it dissolves completely.
Enjoy your next glass of iced tea!

(If you are interested, this sweetener is available here, at our Healthy Radiant Living online store.)

Non-GMO Shopping Guide

Non-GMO-Shopping Guide

If you haven't heard yet about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), than you need to read up on these.  They are rapidly showing up everywhere in our food system and you want to avoid them at all cost.  It is a shame what is happening in America with our food supply, especially when other countries are avoiding GMOs like the plague.  The best way to avoid them is to buy local fresh produce and dairy if at all possible.  This link is for the Non-GMO Shopping Guide's website.  Please check them out and read, read, and read!  Also, if you are in a hurry on time, click here to download their latest copy of their shopping guide.

Another great option for locals in the Pickens County area is the check out the C.A.F.E. website for a member based "food co-op" where you can order fresh, in season local food from your computer and pick up each week at a local location.  If you are not local, but still want to eat as fresh as possible, check out this link for your best options in your area.  Don't forget about local produce stands and farmers markets in your area too!

Stressed??!!

Bag-of-nutritional-yeast-flakes
Bag of Nutritional Yeast Flakes

Feeling Stressed?

While watching the election results tonight, I thought now would be a good time to mention a "tid bit" on STRESS!

If you are often feeling stressed it would be a good idea to make sure you are getting enough of your B vitamins.  A Complex B vitamin supplement would be ideal.

Also, adding a small amount of Nutritional Yeast Flakes to your daily intake would help meet your body's demand for some of these nutrients. Nutritional Yeast is easy to find at most health food stores and very easy to use as well. I find the flakes quite tasty in most of my cooking. Shake some flakes on ground beef while cooking and it will add a slight cheesy flavor.

Add it to eggs, chicken, vegetables, soups, popcorn, mashed potatoes, grits,  almost anything! It is tasty and a super easy way to boost your and your family's B-vitamin intake. :)

Welcome!

We are just getting started and want to welcome you to this site! I hope it will be a place of valuable information to you. Please visit back soon!
